The Sketch of a 20-Something

Body image is something that we truly dread dealing with at one point or another in our lives. We call ourselves fat, we point out our flaws and sometimes look for validation from others that we are in fact “beautiful”. When I saw the Real Beauty campaign by Dove, it made me stop and truly think, if we all just focused on things that we liked about ourselves each day that could make a difference in how we view ourselves. One thing could lead to two or three or four and then maybe those flaws that we saw before won’t be so noticeable anymore.

This isn’t something that just affects women. Men are equally as pressured to look, act, and feel a certain way. This isn’t just confined to their actions but to their attitudes toward women, the way they perceive their bodies or what kinds of activities they are supposed to be into. As a woman I feel like I am supposed to be pointing out something about myself that I don’t like, to help relate to others. I feel like I am supposed to be a certain weight, look a certain way, act a certain way and feel a certain way, instead of just being myself.

So what Dove video was my favourite? The Dove Real Beauty Sketches video brought in different women to describe themselves and then brought in a stranger to describe the same person after only meeting them once. An artist sketched out each woman from the two different perspectives and the result was astounding. What was it that I took from this? We see ourselves a lot differently than how others see us.  We are all beautiful. We aren’t the tired, sallow, dull person that we describe to others, but rather we are vibrant and possess many amazing things that we can offer the world. I truly believe the video captures this.

It is hard enough to be a 20-something trying to figure out what it is I have to offer this world, but I want to do it with my best foot forward. I don’t want to try to fit into a mold that isn’t right for me. I want to love who I am and the beauty I have, because I am me.
